Hidabeni is a beautiful, flattened, round, red, turnip with thin skin that can be eaten unskinned. It will reach 10cm in diameter and 5-6cm deep. You can eat it in any way you prepare your regular turnips but its fine textured flesh and fine flavour allows for use raw in salads or for pickling as well. It is very attractive in the garden and great at attracting kids to gardening. It has very smooth skin. It is quite an excellent source of Vitamins A & C. The young leaves can be used as a green in salads and stir fries. This variety matures in 48 - 65 days. Turnips like a soil that has been pre-prepared with lots of organic matter. The soil must be well drained, as do most root vegetables. This is in order to prevent root rot. If drainage is an issue consider raised bed gardening for this crop. The seeds should be sown1cm deep and 12-20cm apart in rows 30-50cm apart. Sow in Sep- Apr in both Cool and Temperate areas and Aug-May in the Subtropics and from Mar- Sept in the full Tropics.
