This is a popular Canadian variety with a deep purple
crown and creamy yellow base. It has uniform
12-15cm diameter, almost neck-less roots which are
larger and sweeter than other Purple Top varieties.
It has pale yellow flesh with a refined texture and
delicious taste. It is great fried or baked and sweet
and very tasty. The bulbs are very uniform and
Laurentian makes a good market type.

It stores well and is an excellent source of Vitamin C
The young leaves can be used as a green in salads
and stir fries. This variety matures in around 110 days.
Swedes like a soil that has been pre-prepared
with lots of organic matter. The soil must be well
drained, as for most root vegetables. This is in
order to prevent root rot. If drainage is an issue
consider raised bed gardening for this crop. The
seeds should be sown1cm deep and 12-20cm
apart in rows 30-50cm apart. Sow in Sep- Apr in
both Cool and Temperate areas and Aug-May in
the Subtropics and from Mar- Sept in the full Tropics.
