This almost impossible to find butter swede has large yellow
roots and is very easy to grow. For generations it has been
regarded as the best tasting swede around. It is best suited
for family gardens and does not take to commercial production
As a result it is now almost never available. It has sweet firm
yellow flesh that is very delicious in soups, stews, casseroles
and especially prized when baked. It stores well and is an
Excellent source of Vitamin C. The young leaves can be used
as a green in salads and stir fries. This variety matures in
around 110 days. Swedes like a soil that has been prepared
with lots of organic matter. The soil must be well drained, as
do most root vegetables. This is in order to prevent root rot.
If drainage is an issue consider raised bed gardening for this
crop. The seeds should be sown1cm deep and 12-20cm
apart in rows 30-50cm apart. Sow in Sep- Apr in both Cool
and Temperate areas and Aug-May in the Subtropics and
from Mar- Sept in the full Tropics.
