Selfheal is perrenial herb originally from Europe and
found in North America as well. It grows to 30cm and
has square stems topped by a whorl of small purple
flowers. All of the above ground parts are edible. and
are used in salads, soups, stews and as a potherb.
The leaves, stems and flowers can be dried and
ground up to make a tasty beverage. Selfheal has
been used in traditional medicine for many ailments
ranging from digestive, to chest ailments, for mouth
ailments, dairrhoea, internal bleeding, wounds and
illnesses of the liver and heart.
The plant is easy to grow but best germination
occurrs when seeds are refrigerated for 4 weeks
prior to sowing. Germination occurrs 2-4 weeks after
sowing which is best done in a seed tray or pot .
The plants are sown into the garden when about
10cm tall and when they have 6 true leaves. They
 are not fussy about soil type but do best in moist
soil with a neutral pH.
