Trigonella foenum-graecum

This low growing bush plant, to 60cm,  is a legume
and has small round leaves. It is used as a herb, a
spice and a vegetable. It is fast becoming popular
when used as a microgreen or sprouting seed.
Fenugreek has been used since before 4000 BC
and has a pleasant distinctive sweet smell. It has
been used for millenia to swell breasts  in women
and produce milk in lactating mothers. It is said to
increase libido and recent studies have found it has
demonstrated effects in reducing symptoms of both
type 1 and type 2 diabeties. Fenugreek does not
like arid, wet or poor soils. It is easy to grow in areas
where summers are dry. Plant the seeds, in spring,
summer or early autumn, 1cm deep  and lightly cover
them with soil. After watering they will emerge in 2-3
days. The leaves can be harvested regularly once
the plants have been established , in about 3 weeks.
The seed should be collected once their pods turn
yellow and before the pods split.
