Ruta graveolens

Common Rue is a decorative plant with grey-green
leaves and tolerance of dry conditions. It is used as
a medicinal herb, an insect repellant and for cullinary
and condiment purposes. It was used extensively in
Middle Eastern and Roman cuisine and used today
in Ethiopian, Greek and Meditteranian countries.
The seeds can be used to make a porridge. It
makes a lovely ornamental plant and wonderful
when used as a hedge. Some caterpillars feed on
the nectar. Cats take a particular dislike to the
smell of the foliage and this plant is often used to
discourage them from gardens. Rue is very easily
propogated by preparing a garden bed and
scattering the seed in early spring as the soil begins
to warm up. Keep them weeded and kept moist
until the seedlings are established. Transplant the
seedlings into their bed when 5cm high. Plant them
50cm apart in rows 50 cm apart. They actually do
best in poor, dry soil.
