Garlic Chives are a great favourite in any garden. They are great for companion planting. The thin, flat leaves have a delicate flavor with a characteristic garlic taste. They are great with fish, poultry, eggs and in savoury sauces. When using in cooked food, add them during the last 5 to 10 minutes to retain flavour. The attractive white flowers bloom in midsummer, are edible and make a great addition to bouquets. The budded flower stalks are sold as "Gow Choy" in Chinese grocery stores. Garlic Chives take about 90 days to mature. Sow your seeds in circular drills, this will allow a nice cluster/cllump of garlic chives. Direct sowing is best done in spring or sow in tray or pots and transplant when 10-15 cm tall. The will perform their best in well enriched moist soil. They do well in part shade, though full sun will get best results. Sow seeds 0.5 cm deep. These perrenial plants will form dense clumps so do not plant too closely together. They make a great edging for garden paths and look lovely in pots on verandahs and patios.
