Society Garlic is both an edible plant and at the same time not out of place in the ornamental garden. It grows to 60cm in height and will form clumps up to 60cm in diameter It is perennial and tolerates frost and extremes of heat and has only a moderate need for water. When not in flower it is similar to Garlic chives and smells the same. It has a good garlic flavour. The tubers are be used in the same way as garlic. It is quite easy too grow from seed and once established the clumps can easily be divided for use and for re-planting. The flowers are an attractive, long slim lily like flower, mauve/pink in colour. The long attractive, strappy grey-green leaves make it a great edging plant for pathways. It is often located in ornamental gardens. Sow seed 0.5 cm deep in richly composted soil and keep moist until established. Sow after last frost and up to mid autumn. Thin plants to 20 cm apart in rows 40 cm apart.
