The Violet Sicilian, is a vivid purple headed variety that does not produce early flowers but does have tightly bound florets which reduce early opening of the flower heads. The purple colour is vivid when raw but is lost with cooking. It is well flavoured and looks great when used raw. The heads take about 190 days to fully size and often weigh in the vicinity of 1.2-1.4 Kg. Purple varieties have more insect resistance and are easier to grow than white ones. Cauliflowers like cool weather for fastest growth and need well drained, well limed, rich soil for best flavour. Plant the seeds from Octr to April in Cool and Temperate areas and from Feb to April in Tropical and Subtropical areas. The seeds should be sown 0.5-1.0cm deep about 50-75cm apart in rows 75-100cm apart. Cauliflower like other members of the Brassica genus, requires a fertile soil with good moisture-holding capacity. It does not generally do well in hot weather, the best success being with Autumn & Winter plantings. A full sun position is advantageous.
