Brassica oleracea var italica
This is a favorite multi-cut Italian variety of the
calabrese type which produces a small, 8-10 cm
main head projected well above the foliage,
followed by a large yield of side-shoot spears. it is
non-uniform in maturity, resulting in a long harvest
period. Harvest the main head when 8cm in
diameter or less to encourage heavier side-shoot
production. It is an early variety which can mature in
as little as 48 days. Broccoli is closely related to
cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts and,
like these other members of the Brassica genus,
requires a fertile soil with good moisture-holding
capacity. Broccoli does not generally do well in hot
weather, the best success being with Autumn and
Winter. Full sun position is advantageous.
