Leptospermum scoparia

This Australian native perrenial bush can grow as tall
as 25m but is usually grown to 2-3m as a garden
specimum. It produces masses of highly scented
white or pink flowers which are a rich source of highly
sought after honey. It handles most soils very well
and can even thrive in boggy conditions. It responds
well to trimming and pruning which will encourage
dense foliage. The wood was often used for tool
handles. Mānuka sawdust imparts a delicious flavour
when used for smoking meats and fish. It is cultivated
in New Zealand for mānuka honey, produced when
honeybees gather the nectar from its flowers, and for
the pharmaceutical industry. It is also used for carving.
Seeds should be pressed firmly into the soil surface
and kept moist for 14-30 days. They grow easily. Do
not cover with plastic but leave open to airflow to
prevent damping off. Ensure the soil is kept moist.
Prick onto pots when large enough to handle and
transplant into the garden spaced 1-3m apart when
the seedlings are established.
