have been extensively used in traditional medicine.
The tree is rich in papain which has been used for
a couple of thousand years by Native Americans to
tenderise meat. Papain is now harvested
commercially for this purpose. The fruit are rich in
pectin and make very good jellies and jams. The
dried and ground seeds can be used as a black
pepper substitute. In Asia the young leaves are
used steamed in the same ways as spinach.
Papaya plants are best grown from seeds and are
fast growing. Plant the seeds in rich moist soil and
protect from winds. Papaya plants are not suitable
for growing in frost prone areas.
