Lupin polyphyllus lindi
One sure fire way to bring height, colour and drama
into the garden is to grow plants with tall spires of
flowers, and Lupins are a brilliant choice for that.
From cottage to formal, Lupin plants make a big
splash. These pernnial clumps of dark green foliage
grow tall flower spikes in every shad of pastel
imaginable. They love slightly acid soil which is found
in most parts of Australia. Easily grown they do not
require large amounts of fertiliser or water. Plant from
late summer through winter until early spring. In warmer
areas treat it as an annual. It grows in full sun to semi
shade, though prefers good wind protection. Good
drainage is required. Pre-soak the seeds in warm
water for at least 12 hours before sowing. Seed
should be sown 1cm deep and kept moist but not wet
until emergence. They will be ready to bloom in late
Spring or early Summer. Final planting into the ground
should be spaced 30cm apart.
