with a rich Italian style flavour suitable for both fresh
eating and cooking. It has very attractive white and
red leaves  The young leaves are eaten in tossed salads, and
cooked leaves used similarly to spinach in stirfries
and quiches etc. Cultivate by starting like lettuce by direct seeding
or transplanting. Suitable for growing anytime .

Cichorium intybus

Palla Rossa is a lovely crisp leaved round radiccio
with a rich Italian style flavour suitable for both fresh
eating and cooking. It has very attractive white and
red leaves. It makes
an attractive adition to any garden.
The young leaves are eaten in tossed salads, and
cooked leaves used similarly to spinach in stirfries
and quiches etc. They have a similar flavour to
mild dandelion. The plant is great at breaking
up clay soils as it has a very strong, thick tap root.
Cultivate by starting like lettuce by direct seeding
or transplanting. Suitable for growing anytime
during the season. For full-size bunches, space
15-20cm apart and clip leaves at any stage but
especially when young and less than 25cm tall.
For salad mix, direct seed thickly. Unharvested
plants will eventually make a flower stalk with the
characteristic blue chicory flowers.  Apply liquid
fertiliser every two weeks.
