This is an herb grown in northeastern Africa and southern Asia, for its strong fragrant lemon scent used in cooking. It has stems that can grow to 20-40 cm tall with white flowers in late summer to early autumn. The leaves are similar to usual basil leaves, but tend to be narrower. It is much used in Indonesian cuisine, often eaten raw with salad or lalap (raw vegetables) and in company with sambal. It is used to season certain Indonesian curries, grilled, steamed, soup and stew dishes. Also used extensively in Laos and Thai dishes. It should be grown in a spot receiving at least six hours of direct sunlight. It is actually quite hardy and will grow continuously given only water Very much a warm season herb it does not tolerate frosts. Basil appreciates added organic matter in the soil. Should be grown in full sun and will rapidly grow in warm weather. Direct sow in spring, and thin seedlings to 30cm apart. Keep soil moist, but not wet. Pinch out seed heads to help prolong life of basil plant.
